REMEDIAL MASSAGE
Remedial massage is based on the strong human instinct to hold or rub a place that hurts. It is applied to the soft tissues of the body but has a resulting beneficial effect on the nervous and circulatory systems.A remedial massage treatment is varied and may consist of electrotherapy, exercise and mobilization. The main part of the treatment will be massage which allows the therapist to search the soft tissues looking for stress bands, knotted and fibrous areas. The treatment is focused on relaxing and restoring health and tone to the muscles, releasing tight and restricted movement and alleviating localized aches and pains.
MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE (MLD)
MLD is a gentle massage technique, which stimulates the flow of lymph through the body’s one-way lymph drainage pathways. The precise movements of MLD are slow and rhythmical moving the skin in the direction of lymph flow. This activates the vessels to absorb interstitial fluid, the normal action of the lymph system. As lymph flows, it passes through lymph nodes which cleanse the lymph of dead cells and store particles which cannot be broken down in the body.
BENEFITS
- Supports and enhances the immune system.
- Removes metabolic waste, bacteria and foreign substances from the tissues.
- Alleviates pain by blocking pain receptors.
- Relaxes the sympathetic nervous system.
MLD HELPS
- Fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains.
- Oedema before/after surgery.
- Congestion, catarrh and sinusitis.
- Migraine/ eye strain.
- Healing of scars and burns.
- Chronic inflammatory conditions e.g. rosacia, carpel tunnel syndrome.
- Stress /tension /nervous stomachs.
- Primary and secondary lymphoedema.
COMBINED DECONGESTIVE THERAPY
MLD along with bandaging, exercise and skin care is one of the four components in the treatment of both secondary and primary lymphoedema. It speeds up the lymph system which drains the oedematous area. Additional drainage routes can be opened up to assist in reducing the limb volume.
