Feet are complex structures made up of bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, tendons, nerves, blood vessels and skin. They are prone to aches and pains and a variety of problems and conditions. How your feet feel can reflect your general health. If they hurt, they may be signaling a more serious condition so it is important to be alert to warning signs and seek advice from a chiropodist/podiatrist.
Podiatry is the area of medicine concerned with the treatment of disorders of the foot and lower limb and is derived from the Greek ‘Pod’ meaning foot. A podiatrist can be helpful in the postural alignment of the knee, hip and back.
Chiropody is concerned with the care and treatment of feet. This is perhaps a more familiar professional designation.
The terms chiropody and podiatry are nowadays effectively interchangeable. Since 2003 the titles ‘podiatrist’ and ‘chiropodist’ have been protected by law and can only be used by persons registered with the Health Professions Council. |
